FAQ – our answers to frequently asked questions about Pedilay®

What is a ready-to-use dressing?

A ready-to-use dressing does not need to be cut to size or fixed in place with accessories. Pedilay® secondary dressings are an example here - owing to their large opening, elasticity, various sizes and integrated hook and loop fasteners, they are ready to use.

What happens if secondary dressings are applied incorrectly?

Secondary dressings must be applied professionally and properly to prevent strong compression or wrinkling. Shearing forces and constrictions can otherwise lead to pressure marks and skin damage. Pedilay® secondary dressings can even be applied correctly by laypersons, thus minimising this risk. Only correctly applied secondary dressings ensure safe and efficient wound care.

Why can Pedilay® reduce material costs in care?

When treating open wounds, the application of conventional secondary dressings such as bandages and tubular bandages costs physicians and nursing staff valuable time. In addition, cutting to size generates leftover material. In contrast, Pedilay® is ready to use: the ready-to-use dressings can be applied very easily and quickly, even by laypersons.

Additional materials such as scissors or plaster strips are not necessary for Pedilay®, and there is also no leftover material. This can optimise material costs in hospitals as well as nursing facilities and simplify wound management.

What is meant by state-of-the-art wound care?

In contrast to conventional wound treatment, state-of-the-art wound care aims to create a moist wound environment. This accelerates wound healing. Pedilay® is used as a secondary dressing in state-of-the-art wound care.

What is a secondary dressing?

Chronic wounds are initially treated with a wound dressing or primary dressing. A secondary dressing is applied on top for fixation. Pedilay® secondary dressings are ready-to-use and elastic. Their notable distinguishing feature is that they can be applied very easily and quickly, even by laypersons. Owing to the hook and loop fasteners, they can also be opened for wound inspection and then reclosed again.

What is the significance of a secondary dressing?

A secondary dressing has the task of protecting and fixating primary dressings or wound dressings for chronic and other wounds. Correct application of the secondary dressing is important for wound healing. Pedilay® enables secure and correct fixation.

What do bandages include?

Bandages include various products, for example:[1]:

  • patches
  • wound dressings
  • absorbent dressings
  • compresses
  • special dressings
  • secondary dressings
  • fixation plasters

Pedilay® ready-to-use secondary dressings are used to protect and fixate wound dressings and primary dressings.

What are the requirements for bandages?

Bandages for the treatment of wounds should have the following attributes:

  • secure fixation
  • reliable
  • skin-friendly
  • air-permeable
  • user-friendly
  • flexible
  • cost-efficient

Pedilay® secondary dressings are also distinguished by additional advantages in the treatment of chronic wounds:

  • ready-to-use
  • elastic
  • adjustable
  • can be applied quickly and simply without accessories
  • material-saving
  • adjustable (even by patients)
  • reclosable

How often does a wound dressing need to be changed?

Daily changes of a dressing are recommended for acute infections. This applies to both the wound dressing and the fixating secondary dressing, such as Pedilay® or a tubular bandage. Otherwise, it is sufficient to change the secondary dressing in case of soiling, overstretching or tears as well as whenever the primary dressing is replaced.
